We are starting an online group to assist parents of Youth Volunteers with their car pooling efforts!

The Following Projects require additional waivers to be signed and turned in by fax, email, or mail by June 4th.

- We will ACCEPT applications starting 7 a.m. April 15th.
- Applications will be time-stamped and project slot reservations are first-come, first-served.
- Applications may ONLY be faxed (913-432-3313), hand delivered or snail mailed to the Team Leaders (4600 W 51, Suite 300, Roeland Park, KS, 66205).
- Applications will NOT be accepted if they are e-mailed OR early (received before 7 a.m. April 15).
- Incomplete applications will not be time-stamped until the missing information is provided.
- The YVC office will be open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. April 15.
*This new system gives you time to decide with your child which projects you want, sign all the forms, and arrange to have the application here as close to 7 a.m. on April 15 as you can for the BEST possible chance to get the projects you want. It seems extreme, but this is the fairest way we have found to handle the high demand for popular projects.

The Summer Sensation program is an 8-week intensive volunteering program that runs from June to August. Youth Volunteers will have the opportunity to broaden their horizons and experience what it means to help out their community. They will work week-long periods at various community-based organizations in the Greater Kansas City area. As usual, we will provide t-shirts to wear, and projects run from 9am-3pm Monday-Thursday, unless otherwise noted. Also, all programs are free, but donations are always needed and appreciated. All youth ages 11 to 18 are welcome to participate (some projects require youth to be older than 11 to participate, and those exceptions are noted in the project descriptions).

Carondelet Manor Week 4: June 28 to July 1
Do you like playing games and meeting new people? This project is for you! Carondelet is a senior living facility that provides long-term healthcare to people of all faiths, races, and backgrounds. Youth Volunteers will get to know the residents by playing board games, cards, bingo, trivia, and going bowling. We’ll also plant a garden.

Emmanuel's Camp Empowerment Week 7: July 19 to 22
Did you have a great experience at camp when you were a kid? With this project, you can make sure that all kids, regardless of socioeconomic background, get the chance to go to camp. We will be pairing up with kids at this inner-city camp and serving as mentors for them while helping with activities from tennis to swimming. Be sure to wear closed-toe shoes! You must be 14 to participate in this project.

Fairmount Community Center Week 2: July 14 to 17
Fairmount Community Center offers neighbors a place to get to know each other and improve their community. Youth Volunteers will help the facility by building a community garden, constructing a composter, planting flower beds, and working on general landscaping. We will eat lunch with the seniors at the community center every day and have a BBQ and party on the last day.

Habitat for Humanity ReStore Week 4: June 28 to July 1
ReStore’s mission is to support the construction of houses by the KC Habitat for Humanity through the collection and sale of new and used building materials. Youth Volunteers will be dismantling displays from the Skills Build convention, which means we will be taking apart walls, separating electrical and plumbing materials, and salvaging lumber. Bring your muscles, your hammer and (perhaps most importantly) your common sense. Be sure to wear close-toed shoes!! You must be 16 to participate in this project.

Habitat for Humanity – Truman Week 7: July 19 to 22
Think you know how to build house? Do you want to learn how to build house? Habitat for Humanity works to fulfill the dream of home ownership for low-income families. We will be helping to build a house that will be sold at no interest to a family in need. While you are on this project, you will learn about the problems that many face when trying to buy a home. You will also make a difference in the lives of a local family. Be sure to wear close-toed shoes!! You must be 16 to participate in this project.

Harvesters Week 3: June 21 to 24 & Week 6 July 12 to 15
Do you want to help solve hunger in Kansas City? Be a part of the solution at Harvesters, Kansas City’s largest food bank! Harvesters and its network of agencies provide food to families when they need a helping hand. Come sort and box donated food and package donated household items. Learn about the problems of hunger in our community and how we can help to put an end to hunger. Be sure to wear close-toed shoes!!

Hillcrest Thrift Shop Week 5: July 5 to 8
The funds from Hillcrest Thrift Shop support Hillcrest Transitional Housing. Hillcrest’s mission is to move families from homelessness to self-sufficiency in 90 days! At the shop, Youth Volunteers will be putting their business and fashion skills to work. We will be doing a variety of activities, from pricing, sorting and displaying donated items to assisting with the cash registers and more!

Humane Society Week 8: July 26 to 29
The Humane Society of Kansas City is a no-kill animal shelter whose mission is to improve the lives of dogs and cats through out the city. Youth Volunteers will be doing a variety of activities, including socializing cats, assisting in the clinic and promoting spay/neuter services.Be sure to wear closed-toe shoes! Only one animal project allowed per youth (Independence Animal OR Humane Society but not both).

Independence Animal Shelter Week 4: June 28 to July 1
Are you a pet lover? Come join us at Independence Animal Shelter where youth volunteers will help us walk dogs, socialize cats, clean animal cages and do other tasks to help us at the no-kill animal shelter. We will also build agility equipment for the dogs to use. The shelter will be closed on July 5 in honor of July 4, so Week t here will be July 6-8.) Only one animal project allowed per youth (Independence Animal OR Humane Society but not both).

J-14 Enterprise – The Farm Week 1: June 7 to 10 & Week 3: June 21 to 24
Do you know what it takes to grow your own veggies? Learn this and more at J-14 Enterprises – The Farm. We will be helping out at this organic urban farm by planting peach trees, weeding around crops, removing fence post from around the hog pen, and other farm chores Farmer Joe has planned. Come prepared to work hard and have fun!.

Jewish Vocational Services Week 1: June 7 to 10
Jewish Vocational Services’ This is a great project for anyone interested in learnign about other cultures. Jewish vocational services is the agency responsible for refygee resettlement in westert Missouri. We will be planting a flower and vegetable garden for people living in the Burmese community, making crafts with Burmese children, and organizing the food pantry. On the last day we will have a cook out with the refugee's.

Joshua Center for Neurological Disorders Week 2: July 14 to 17
The Joshua Center for Neurological Disorders is having a camp for children with Tourette Syndrome, Asperger Syndrome and those with an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Youth Volunteers will be assisting camp counselors and hanging out with the campers! You must be 14 to participate in this project. Due to conditions of the campers, this project requires mature Youth Volunteers.

Kansas City Community Kitchen Week 1: June 7 to 10 & Week 8: July 26 to 29
We are happy to once again offer Kansas City Community Kitchen for two weeks this summer! The Kansas City Community Kitchen The Kansas City Community Kitchen serves 500 meals per day, so we will be creating those meals from start to finish by preparing, serving, and cleaning up after lunch. Youth will also learn about homelessness in Kansas City and how they can help. This is a popular project, so Youth Volunteers may sign up for only ONE of the two weeks!

Mental Health Services of the Heartland Week 6: July 12 to 16
Mental Health America of the Heartland is dedicated to promoting the mental health of the community, and improving the lives of persons with mental illness through advocacy, education, and support. Youth Volunteers will work with apartment residents to “spring clean” their apartments, organize possessions, and do light landscaping outside. We’ll also be learning about mental illnesses and the unfounded negative attitudes toward individuals who suffer from them.

If you like kids, this is the project for you! Operation Breakthrough is an inner city daycare whose mission is to help children who are living in poverty develop to their fullest potential by providing them with a safe, loving and educational environment. Youth Volunteers will be assisting in class rooms, playing and reading to children, and other projects! You must be 14 to participate in this project.

Operation International Children Week 4: June 28 to July 1
Operation International Children is an organization that reaches out to kids in war-torn areas and helps support our soldiers' efforts to assist people in Iraq and Afghanistan. Youth Volunteers will be helping to assemble school kits and package donations destined for children in Iraq, Afghanistan and other countries.

Parkville Nature Sanctuary Week: 6 July 12 to 15 & Week: 8 July 26 to 29
Parkville Nature Sanctuary has multiple walking and hiking trails that make the area accessible with minimal impact on the land and wildlife habitat. Youth Volunteers will be helping to chip and mulch trails, cut down invasive honeysuckle and pull out garlic mustard. At the end of the week, you’ll admire your work by going on a nature hike through the sanctuary..

Project X Week 5: July 5 to 8
For the first time ever, YVC is offering veteran Youth Volunteers a special summer project. Project X will require a high degree of maturity and enthusiasm. Interested youth will need to submit an essay to YVC answering the following two questions in detail:1) What has been your favorite YVC project and why? 2) How has YVC impacted your life? Submit your essays to Nicolette at ngeisler@yvca.org by April 30, 2010. Past YVC experience and leadership potential will also be considered. We only have 10 slots for this project so make your essays good!

reStart Inc. Week 7: July 19 to 22
reStart serves the homeless of Kansas City by providing shelter and support services with the goal of helping people move toward independence and self-sufficiency. Youth Volunteers will be painting, sorting donations, and cleaning the pantry to help this organization that serves men, women, youth, and families.

Sanctuary of Hope Week 2: July 14 to 17
Sanctuary of HopeSanctuary of Hope is a place for community members to get away from the noise, violence, and the stress of everyday living, with 32 acres of trees, foliage, flowers, and wildlife. Youth Volunteers will be mulching trails, maintaining the butterfly garden, and planting flowers.

Shoal Creek Living History Museum Week 1: June 7 to 10
Shoal CreekShoal Creek is a village of more than 20 authentic 19th century buildings including log cabins and a brick mansion. We will be gardening, painting, and chinking log cabins. On our last day there, we will be playing historical games and having a BBQ!

St. Mary’s Manor Week 3: June 21 to 24
St. Mary’s Manor is a senior living facility offering individualized care with a full-range of skilled nursing and rehabilitative services. Youth Volunteers will assist the facility by gardening, painting, and laying brick for the patio. We will also interact with the seniors by playing board games, bingo, and having a party on the last day. Be sure to wear closed-toe shoes!

Swope Ridge Geriatric Center Week 2: July 14 to 17
Join us for the Summer Senior Olympics at Swope Ridge! Youth Volunteers will host the Olympic games that include both indoor and outdoor competitions and races for the senior citizens. We will set up and clean up as well as be in charge of the games. Be sure to wear closed-toe shoes!

Turnstyles is a thrift store operated by the Catholic Charities, and all proceeds are used by the Catholic Charities to help fund many services to the community. Youth Volunteers will have an opportunity to showcase their up-and-coming business skills. We will be maintaining the store, sorting donations, creating displays and pricing items! Be sure to wear closed-toe shoes!
